Poster Analysis

The genre of the text is a poster, this is evident with the persuasive content and the graphological features implemented into the text. The register of the poster is formal, this is because the subject is covering an idea which is very severe and associated with the law, therefore the content of the text is appropriate to the subject. The audience of the poster is for teenagers, this is mainly because of the poster being located in the college. Also, it could be suggested that teenage life is where alcohol slowly creeps its way into teenage life, therefore this poster is to help prevent this from happening. The mode of the poster is written, with the poster feeling planned and constructed for a specific purpose. The purpose of the text is to persuade, this is seen with the imperative sentences and text image cohesion to capture the audience’s attention. The subject of the text is regarding alcohol, with the main signpost of this being the use of image.

Immediately from looking at the text, there is a prevalent use of imperative sentences, suggesting that the business is confident in their knowledge. With all imperative clauses in the poster starting with the word ‘don’t’, this conveys an image of a company who are professional and are abiding by the law, which enforces the audience to contemplate the consequences and maybe modify their feelings towards alcohol. In addition to this, the conditional tense is utilized in the poster, which makes the audience apply this to their own situation and think about their behaviour around alcohol, reinforcing the idea of the poster’s main purpose to amend the audience’s view on alcohol. This use of conditional tense plays a pivotal part in the persuasive aspects of the poster, because by using the word ‘if’, it enforces the audience to think about the subject, furthermore meaning that the use of grammar in the text is used to aid the persuasive factors. The use of rhyme in the poster is also another way to embellish the persuasive factors. The verbs ‘drink’ attached to ‘think’ allow the poster to become much more memorable and distinctive, subtly enforcing audiences to remember the slogan and apply it to their own mannerisms.

It could be suggested that the poster’s content is laid out as a list of rules and regulations, which conveys an image of the company being assertive and strict. Because the content is laid out sporadically as a list form, it allows the audience to easily absorb the content being exhibited to them, however if the content was more complex and in coherent paragraphs, the audience may struggle to digest all the information given.
